The second half of the four hour, season eight premiere of 24 kicked off with a bang last night, and really, would you expect anything less?
Jack is in hot pursuit of the assassin that’s going to take down President Hassan (with Chloe helping him out), while said assassin is holding his U.N. security detail “partner” and his wife hostage. Bauer finds them both dead, but the cops show up in time to stun Jack, and beat the hell out him for being a cop killer. Poor Jack, always in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Meanwhile, CTU Director Brian Hastings, still thinks he has the right suspect in reporter Merideth Reed, and he’s pushing the matter pretty hard. She spills the beans that she’s been having an affair with Hassan, but Brian doesn’t believe her. Chloe tells Hastings that she’s lost contact with Jack and needs help, but he refuses until he checks out that Reed’s story is true. Hassan confirms the affair though, but Hastings still doesn’t send back-up to check on Jack.
Farhad contacts the assassin, worrying that their frame job on Reed won’t hold. He tells Hassan’s brother not to worry, that the President will be dead very soon.
You with me so far? Good.
CTU finds out that there is a bomb inside the United Nations, and Hastings implements evacuation protocols, with agent Ortiz leading Hassan out of the building. Jack gets free from the cops and alerts Ortiz that the assassin is posing as a police officer. The assassin pulls the trigger, and things go boom.
One hour down. One to go. Whew!
Ortiz gets Hassan out of there, much to the chagrin of the assassin, who gets spotted by the CTU agent. While they’re in pursuit, he fields a call from Farhad, telling him to get the heck away from the scene. He sticks a pen in an agents neck and runs. The assassin traps Ortiz, but Jack shows up in the nick of time to blow him away. Bauer FTW!
Hassan arrives at CTU and is told about his brother being involved in the assassination attempt. Talk about a hard pill to swallow. Hastings gives Chloe her due for a job well done and Chloe gives the first of what will be few smiles during the season.
Everyone learns the truth that it’s actually a Russian syndicate behind the attempt on President Hassan’s life, and they bring in a familiar face in the way of former FBI agent, Renee Walker (looking hotter than ever!), to debrief them, since she’s the only one who has ever gotten close to those mean ol’ Russians.
When the body of the assassin is brought to CTU, it triggers a HAZMAT alert, with a high level of weapons-grade uranium emitting off it. Huh? Hassan tells Hastings that it’s from the Russians, who offered his brother some decommissioned uranium a while back. How convenient.
Walker tells CTU that the Russians are from a group called Red Square. A ‘you-can-break-our-legs-and-arms-and-we’ll-never-talk’ kind of group. Hastings asks Renee is she’ll go back undercover to infiltrate the syndicate. Pfft, yeah right. Oh snap! She agrees. Walker FTW?
She tells CTU that she needs to get close to a man named Vladamir (aren’t all Russians named that?). Jack storms into the meeting, says Renee shouldn’t do the job alone, and just like that he’s back in the thick of things.
Farhad arrives back at the Russian den, demanding proof that the uranium rods still exist. He gets it, and sends Big Red their money, thus setting into motion another attempt on Hassan, and the United States.
Renee and Jack go to see one of her old informants, Ziya, who is wearing a parole bracelet and can’t help her. She says she can get it off if he’ll help, and she does. By hacking off his hand!
That’s it, I need a nap. This show is too much. Thankfully, it’s back down to an hour next week on FOX.
