I watched the premier of Archer on FX Television and I have to say this is perhaps the most whacked-out, original comedy show I’ve ever experienced. Very much like Pulp Fiction this animated TV series stands out in what is becoming an almost cookie cutter industry. I think if a poll was taken that Archer would perhaps be the show voted most likely to develop a strong cult following.
I can’t say enough about the originality of this adult animated comedy even though I was pretty shocked by some of the mature language and content. Yet the language and the on the edge political incorrectness of the series is what makes it totally unique, not to mention the almost comic book style in which the characters are drawn.
This series is about a secret agent named Sterling Archer, played by H.
Jon Benjamin, who can best be described as a suave, vain and overly confident man who works for his mother. He is classified as an expert secret agent but in this episode he seemed about as personable as stump… And that’s being nice. You can’t help but to smirk and grin at some of the comments and action of this character – it’s really fun to watch.
Aisha Tyler of Talk Soup popularity is Lana, the ex-girl friend of Archer, who is heavy into adult films and is the show’s bad girl, or at least the dangerous girl considering all the women on this show seem to be bad or devious in some way or another.
Cyril Figis is Lana’s current boy friend and can be described as being a rigid, unerring company man and Sterling’s easiest target for ridicule and humiliation. There is a type of love triangle between Archer, Lana and Cyril and it doesn’t help that they all work for the same company. Their little love triangle was the theme of this week’s episode entitled “Training Day.” Archer wants Lana back and is trying to drive a wedge between her and Cyril’s relationship.
Archer’s mother hates the fact that her son would want a black-ops agent as a girl friend and wants to insure that Cyril and Lana stay together. She recognizes that Lana likes men who are Archer’s type, so she orders Archer to train Cyril to be a secret agent too – That’s pretty twisted if you stop and think about the scenario as a whole. From there this entire episode of Archer goes off the beaten path with some ridiculously abrasive yet humorous scenes to make up a bizarre storyline.
