This week’s episode of CSI: NY was likely one of the most interesting episodes that I’ve seen in a long time. It’s an episode that actually has a dual murder overlapping murder so that you don’t have a true subplot but two headlining events in the same storyline. True, CSI: NY is known for its complex story lines and that is what makes the show so great, but in this Criminal Justice episode the inside manipulation of the system, tied in with the murder investigation, really kept my attention throughout the show.
The story starts off with an intruder attacking a young woman in her home and the first thing I thought about was that this was going to be one of those rape cases gone bad. However we find out that this eighteen year old had her throat cut trying to protect her street wise boy friend that goes by the name Demon from a thug he owed 15k.
This storyline is still pretty cut and dry, they have an eyewitness to the crime plus forensic evidence, so this guy is about to be denied bail and taken off the streets until Detective Stella Bonasera barges into the courtroom disrupting the procedure. This in turns allows this cold blooded murder to get bail and be back out on the street to the utter disgust of the mother of the murdered girl who makes it a point to find Stella afterward and let her know how she felt about what she did.
The scene backs up in time from the point of Stella charging into the court back to the CSI NY team finding evidence that they quickly discovered was planted at the scene. It turns out that a couple they believed was the happiest in the world were having marital problems and the wife was sleeping around with a college looking young stud muffin.
Long story short, her husband finds this guy’s cigarette lighter in his bedroom and uses the CSI forensics to get the finger prints off of it and determine who it was. He does this by leaving the lighter at the crime scene of the murdered girl, which of course screws with the murder investigation.
This episode was so clever in that when her husband, who is a DA, sees the young guy his reaction is that he couldn’t believe a clean cut guy like that would commit murder, but in reality it was a reaction that was saying he couldn’t believe his wife would sleep around on him with a guy like that.
After the guy is released the DA confronts him at his home and in a jealous rage smashes his head in with a clock. From there he uses all of his 15 years of DA skills to try to cover up his crime making it extremely difficult to prove there had even been a murder. This was indeed a very clever and intriguing episode of CSI NY.
