This has just been a terrible week for NBC, hasn’t it? Rumors flying everywhere about Jay Leno’s show being cancelled and rumors that Conan O’Brien was being ousted. Now we find out that rumors have a tendency to have a kernel of truth in them.
NBC has finally announce that after February, there will be no more The Jay Leno Show during prime time. The general idea is that he’ll keep his show but make it only a half hour, starting at 11:35 p.m., The Tonight Show’s time slot. As was speculated before, The Tonight Show will move back to 12:05 a.m. and Jimmy Fallon’s show will air at 1:05 a.m.
NBC said they hope all three late night hosts will stay with the network, but I hope they honestly don’t expect them to. It seems they’re bending over backwards to accommodate Leno and snubbing O’Brien and Fallon in the meantime. FOX has said they’re interested in having a show for any of the three hosts, but only time will tell whether or not someone will jump ship.
Howie Mandel has signed to America’s Got Talent. Yes, that’s right Howie Mandel. Seriously. Last week, David Hasselhoff announced he’d be leaving the show to pursue a show of his own and apparently Mandel was chosen to take his place. Mandell was the host of Deal or No Deal and Howie Do It, both of which were cancelled last year.
In what I’m sure is absolutely shocking news to everyone, Miley Cyrus has decided she’s no longer playing her alter ego, Hannah Montana, after this coming season. Adam Bonnett, senior VP/programming for Disney Channel Worldwide said in a statement to the NY Post, “Right now we’re scheduled to wrap [forever] after shooting this new batch of episodes.” I’m sure our hearts are just weeping.
The saddest news of the week is the creator of the beloved clay creature Gumby passed away in his sleep Friday. Art Clokey was 88 years-old. Clokey created Gumby in the 1950s as a short to be added to The Howdy Doody Show. Gumby ended up with his own show, The Adventures of Gumby, which was the first to use claymation on television.
That about wraps it up for the weekend. Don’t forget to check back with me next weekend for more news!
