It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Marge, Homer, Lisa, Maggie and Bart first made their way in to our home, and last night on FOX, The Simpsons were celebrated with their 20th Anniversary Special. In 3D! On Ice!
Hosted by Morgan (Super Size Me) Spurlock, who went around the country to trace the history of America’s favorite yellow family, the special took a look at everything from its early days on The Tracey Ullman Show, to its rise as a global phenomenon. Hell, the word “D’OH” has even been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. How can you not celebrate a show that has accomplished that?
Spurlock went all out for this one, to perhaps create the greatest Simpsons tribute ever.
He visited the homes of America and the UK to find collectors of everything Simpsons. Found people with the likes of Milhouse tattooed on their body. Visited the San Diego Comic Con. Invaded people on the streets to ask them who their favorite characters were. Interviewed the actors that voice the characters, talked to celebrities, musicians, and just about everyone else who has a tie to the show. It really was a tremendous tribute.
Through it all, I learned a thing or too as well. I didn’t know that Springfield was based off a city in Portland, Oregon. Nor did I know that the characters were named after the streets. Those are the kind of facts I love to hear about. It makes me feel that much closer to the show for some reason. Like I could go in to the next room and find Homer scratching himself on my couch.
Spurlock has come a long way since his days of eating Big Macs and Quarter Pounders for a month straight. After seeing The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special. In 3D! On Ice!, I can’t think of a better person to have complied such an amazing tribute. So here’s to you, Simpson family, for keeping us entertained all these years. May you live on for 20 more to keep us laughing our asses off.
Wait. Can I say that?
D’OH!

It's hard to believe the Simpsons have been around more than half my life. I couldn't imagine any other show lasting that long and still managing to please viewers.
