Extras was an amazing show for a number of reasons, but the big one that sticks out in my mind is the guest stars that change the perception of how viewers are used to seeing them. Rickey Gervais‘ show was notorious for showcasing stars because of the nature of the story lines, but after a long internal debate to narrow down the list, here are my top three. Waste this weekend with my top three guest appearances on Extras.
Season 1 Episode 3 – Kate Winslet
Movie star Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader and Revolutionary Road) did this as good as anyone else on on Extras when she portrayed herself as a dirty talking relationship guru for Maggie Jacobs. The episode follows Andy and Maggie as they play background performers on a Holocaust film where Winslet is the star.
The comedy stems from Maggie’s problem of not being able to talk dirty on the phone to her boyfriend. After lamenting her problem to Andy, Winslet over hears and offers some hilarious tips. Not only did she blast down my perception of who she is as a person, she showed some amazing comedic timing had some brilliant lines.
Season 2 Episode 3 – Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe put forth a memorable performance as a hormone driven pubescent version of his 15 year old self. His success as the character Harry Potter in a few movies you might have heard of created a very proper perception of a polite young man with his head firmly planted upon his shoulders. Extras opened the world up to what Radcliffe can do in a comedic environment. In this episode, Maggie plays an extra on a fantasy kids film where Radcliffe is the star. The hilarity begins when the cameras stop rolling on the film and Radcliffe turns into a perverted teenager wanting nothing more than to shag. He goes as far as presenting Maggie with a condom as part of his proposition only to be denied on numerous occasions. Although the proposition was as shocking as it was funny, Radcliffe’s best scenes are those when he switches personalities while his mother is around. It really plays on the concept of child stars and how they develop as real people.
Season 2 Episode 4 – Chris Martin
Who knew Chris Martin was the whole package? Well, Ricky Gervais did and the Coldplay star put forth one of the best Extras performances the show ever produced. Playing a spoiled, gigantic headed superstar version of himself, Martin showed that his skills in comedic timing and line delivery are just as good as his concert performances. In this episode, Andy is knee deep in the production of his sitcom. While doing a charity spot, he meets Martin who will stop at nothing to promote his fictional album Coldpay’s Greatest Hits. This includes appearing on Andy’s sitcom, talking about spots on Deal Or No Deal and going as far as promoting the album through the charity. If you’re going to watch one episode of Extras, make sure it’s this one.
