The VlogBrothers and founders of Nerdfighters, Hank and John Green, have been cracking up the members of YouTube for three years. In fact, today, Janury 1, 2010, is their third-year anniversary over at YouTube. Happy anniversary, guys! To close out 2009, Hank teamed up with musical comedy duo, Rhett and Link to summarize some of 2009′s stupidest news stories in song.
From the swearing in of Obama and Kanye West’s silencing of Taylor Swift, to the hype over H1N1 and the Michael Phelps marijuana scandal, they make a great point. The news definitely has its place in the world, keeping the masses informed on important developments that impact our daily lives, but how often does it seem like the media exacerbates even the smallest events, turning them into world-scale mayhem.
Does the media take advantage of the millions of people who tune in regularly to keep up to date with current affairs? One good example is the Swine Flu drama that gripped the globe over the last year. Indeed, the Swine Flue epidemic took the lives of 4,000 people over the last year, but as Hank Green points out in his lyrics, plain old, ordinary influenza kills over 60,000 people every year without the same media hype. Just a little something to think about as we embrace a brand new year.
