Recently, I was given the chance to interview The Real World DC cast member Erika. She had a lot to tell me about her life and the show. Erika is the singer of the bunch. Back in Chicago, her hometown, she was in a local band called “Quiet Capture.” However, some members’ lack of dedication cause Erika to concentrate on a solo career.
Erika said, “The show allowed me to find myself and gave me inspiration for writing more.” She sings dance style music similar to Lady Gaga. She was the only one of the three cast members I interviewed with a boyfriend or girlfriend at home. She said when she first moved into the house it was hard balancing the relationship and the show, but after a while she was able to find a happy medium. Erika tried out for the show after seeing an advertisement when she was bar hopping with her friend Shannon. She had just graduated college and thought she might try this instead of jumping straight into the workforce.
Erika says she is happy to have taken friendships home after The Real World.
Callie was Erika’s closest friend in the house, but many of the cast made an impact on her life. Erika said, “This was a completely unique experience with real and special people. No one could ever duplicate the experience I had in a million years.”
Erika said her favorite thing about DC was the diversity of people and places. She stated, “It’s like everything America has to offer in one place.” She said this year most of the cast gets involved in the political system either with jobs, internships, or just volunteering for various causes. She volunteered for the HRC- and Washington vote.
During the four months in the house, Erica said everyone grew and learned about themselves and others. There were some heated debates in the house and, of course, some other cast members hooking up. She said she learned when to accommodate other people’s feelings and how to be a good friend during the show. She also learned the importance of getting involved in the political system and how many causes are out there.
Erika was full of energy and very friendly. She is definitely one who loves attention and likes to share her options. We may see a lot of her during the season. The season premiere of The Real World: DC takes place December 30th on MTV.
