Jeff_Dunham_Christmas_300x300Last night I watched Jeff Dunham’s “A Very Special Christmas Special” which I also saw called “A Very Achmed Christmas.”  I can’t say I enjoyed it.

Jeff Dunham is a ventriloquist and is very good at it, I will give him that.  He has a television show on Comedy Central that runs on Thursdays.  Jeff utilizes a cast of characters from his head using his puppets and somehow struck gold with it.  I’ve seen his specials before and they weren’t too bad, but I didn’t see his latest character, Achmed the Dead Terrorist.

I can see how it might be patriotic to poke fun at the people who attacked our country back in 2001.  I mean, look at Toby Keith.  He makes a living off of it.  However, I found Achmed the Dead Terrorist to be awfully and playing to stereotypes.  Achmed sang Christmas carols during the show, including his favorite, “Jingle Bombs.”  Seriously?  This is what comedy’s come to?

All of Jeff’s characters play to some sort of stereotype- the cranky old man Walter, the beer drinking redneck Bubba J, etc.  I will admit, I chuckled a bit at some of Walter’s crankiness, but that’s really it.  As someone who comes from a redneck family (my birth family, not married family) I’ve seen people who are like Bubba J- dumb, drink constantly, watch too much NASCAR, etc.  However, it’s not the norm and I really hate the perpetuation of that particular stereotype.  I guess people either laugh at or are afraid of what they don’t understand.

Jeff Dunham himself seems like a nice guy.  I just don’t care for his comedy. Check out the full special on the video below and see what you think.
