In 1975, the longest-running syndicated game show in history debuted, and ever since then American’s everywhere have been solving puzzles day-after-day as Vanna White turns the letters to reveal the answers on Wheel of Fortune.
So, what was the first letter Vanna ever turned over? Let’s take a look at the board.
Up until 1997, the show was using a manually operated puzzle board, before switching over to a touch screen computerized one. This made things easier and prevented show stops, where in the case of the old board, the show would stop taping in order for the board to be wheeled off stage, while the new puzzle was set out of sight of the contestants.
With the new computerized board, no show stops were necessary, which means that taping could be sped up, thus lowering production costs.
Even though Vanna White didn’t appear on the show until 1982, when I think of Wheel of Fortune, I always remember her walking back and forth, turning those letters and clapping. Heck, in 1992 she was given the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most frequent clapper, averaging 720 claps per episode. Of course, she’s most famous for her letter turning. With over 5000 shows taped, that’s a lot of letters, man.
So, what was the first letter Vanna ever turned over?
I’d like a ‘T,’ please.
That’s right. The first letter Vanna White ever turned over for Wheel of Fortune, was the letter ‘T.’ The puzzle? General Hospital.

I would've guessed the Price is Right was the longest running game show.

I remember all of Toronto was enthralled when Vanna White came to visit the CNE for some reason, back in the 80s or early 90s. It's amazing to think of her career longevity, given the task she has to do day in and day out. Not difficult, perhaps, but taxing in its own way. Great trivia!
