Mary_Tyler_Moore_300x300Mary Tyler Moore was born December 29, 1936.  Mary Tyler Moore was the first born of Marjorie and George Tyler Moore in Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn, NY and she has two siblings. She attended Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic school in Brooklyn, St. Ambrose School in Los Angeles and the Immaculate Heart High School on Lose Felize Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

She is best known for her starring rolls in two great iconic sitcoms; first she starred as Laura Petrie on the very popular Dick Van Dyke Show which ran from 1961-1966. Her roll as the Van Dyke’s wife won her an Emmy. Perhaps even more popular was the show in which she starred in from 1970 – 1977, self-entitled The Mary Tyler Moore Show which portrayed Mary as a serious, independent working woman.

When the show was cancelled after it slipped in the ratings to number 39 there was a national outcry from the Women’s Movement at the time. Once the cancellation was announced the show did finish strong in the ratings and the last episode became the most watched show for the week it aired.

Even though her two biggest television projects were now behind her, Mary Tyler Moore had become an international star and was now able to move on to numerous other TV shows and had much success on the Broadway Theater.

Moore starred in such theater plays such as Who’s Life Is It Anyway, Sweet Sue and also starred in the musical version of Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

She was nominated for the Best Actress award in 1980 for the movie Ordinary People. She also has numerous credits in other films that include, Just Between FriendsKeys to Tulsa, Labor Pains and Cheats.

The cable network TV Land dedicated an iconic statue to Ms. Moore in May 2002, in downtown Minneapolis. It stands in front of the Macy’s department store near the corner of 7th Street and Nicollet Mall. The statue is posed in the well-known moment in her show’s opening credits where Mary throws her cap in the air.
