When Susan Boyle walked onto the stage of Britain’s Got Talent, no one expected the sound she created to come out of the shell presented. Susan is no super model, but the Scottish born singer became an instant sensation the minute she opened up her pipes and sang “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables.
Now more dreams are coming true for Ms. Boyle. Last week she set the record for highest single sales in 2009 and this week her album I Dreamed A Dream is added to the top ten best selling albums of this year (it has sold 1.2 million copies already). Sony was smart and put copies of her album wherever a fan may be- from QVC to Walgreens. Her sales have only declined 25% from her first week to the second, unlike American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert’ who saw a 74% decline in his second week of sales.
It’s understandable why the American public is enthralled with Susan Boyle. Not only is she a fantastic singer, she managed to shut Simon Cowell up (which is something many Americans have wanted to do for many an American Idol season). When someone who’s not conventionally beautiful takes a leap like Susan did, people pre-judge and almost wish for them to fail. Susan Boyle gives hope to many singers out there who wouldn’t normally get a second look from executives because of their looks. I’ll be looking for my copy of the album under the Christmas tree come end of December as I’m sure many of you will too. Sing on Susan!

This does prove that talent can win over the popular or the personality. Finally, score one for the underdog!
