Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys is the animated sequel to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This sequel has the honor of being as beloved as the original. When I mentioned writing this post to my husband, he became as giddy as a school girl. I too have fond memories of this Rankin/Bass holiday special.
The original was so popular that many famous actors agreed to be the voices in this special. Some of these actors include Richard Dreyfuss, Rick Moranis, and Jamie Lee Curtis. These recognizable voices add notoriety to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys.
The plot of the story follows Rudolph and Hermey the Elf, the Elf from the original that wanted to be a dentist.
He has succeeded in his dream and is now a D.D.S. Meanwhile, Rudolph is tired of performing tricks for the residents of the North Pole and decides to travel with Hermey to the Island of Misfit Toys to give King Moonracer a root canal. When they get to the island they discover The Evil Toy Maker has been kidnapping the toys, claiming that his is saving them. Rudolf teams up with Clarice, Yukon Cornelius, Hermey, and the Abominable Snowman to save the toys from the Evil Toy Maker.
In 2001, the special received five nominations from the Video Premiere Awards. Many critics did not think highly of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys. However, there are many people who love this special as much, if not more, than the original. You can check this special out on many stations this holiday season.
