ATWT thumbIt’s a sad day. We are about to lose one of the longest running soap operas in America. Yes, it’s true. CBS is cancelling As the World Turns next year. As the World Turns has been on the air for 54 years and has received 58 Daytime Emmys.

On December 8, 2009, CBS announced they were cancelling the soap opera and the last episode will air in September. The show started in 1956 as a 30 minute live broadcast. Jeannie Tharrington, a spokesperson for the show said, “TeleNext Media, the company that owns the show, is actively looking for a new network to air As the World Turns.”

Leslie Monnves, CBS CEO said, “They’ve had long and distinguished runs and their day is over.” This statement was harsh for most avid viewers. CBS has previously stated that they have also cancelled Guiding Light after 72 years on radio and television.  It seems that CBS soaps are dropping like flies.  Nothing is sacred. Over 50 years on the air is a massive accomplishment for any radio or television program. CBS is blaming the cancellations on the economy, stating that talk shows and other entertainment is cheaper for the network than hour-long soap operas.

Many now famous actors got their start appearing on As the World Turns and Guiding Light. These include: James Earl Jones, Meg Ryan, Marisa Tomai, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Taye Diggs.  Besides giving these guys their start, the show has dealt with many issues including AIDS, abuse, drug addiction and many more.

I guess it is the end on an era in American television. The loss of these two amazing soap operas may be the beginning of the end for many others.  The fans will surely miss all the characters and story lines.
