Men_Certain_Age_300x300In Men of a Certain Age, three college friends remain close as they age.  When middle age hits them full in the face, they look back at their lives and wonder, “What happened?”

Joe (Ray Romano) is a father of two who’s now separated from his wife and living in a hotel.  Joe always wanted to be a professional golfer but ended up the owner of Joe’s Party Depot with a gambling habit.  He wants to reconcile with his wife, but he knows it may be impossible.  He sees this beautiful woman at his shop and then at the place he and his friends go hiking, but doesn’t get up the nerve to talk to her until the end of the show.

Terry (Scott Bakula) is an actor who’s getting on in years.  He moonlights as a yoga instructor and a temp in between acting gigs.  Terry gets a lot of support from the people he temps with and from the barista he has a crush on.  The barista pushes him to go to an audition for Lifetime and he goes despite his feelings about it.  Since he got up the courage to audition, he asks out his barista friend.

Owen (Andre Braugher) is a family man with a wife, three kids, a house that’s being renovated, and a job in the family car dealership that he hates.  He’s diabetic and has sleep apnea.  He doesn’t do as well as the top salesman, Marcus, at his father’s dealership and his father tells him he’s an embarrassment.  Owen decides to prove his father wrong and get in shape, but has a diabetic seizure while hiking with Terry and Joe.  He tells his wife he doesn’t want to go back to his job, but his wife begs him to keep at it for her and the kids.  He decides to impress his father by grabbing more sales, knocking over Marcus in the process.

When I saw this preview, I thought it was going to be absolutely hilarious.  I enjoy Ray Romano’s comedy and was expecting something similar to Everybody Loves RaymondMen of a Certain Age is nothing like it.  There were funny moments but the show was more of a window into the lives of these men, seeing how their age has really affected them.  It made me feel like I was looking into my father’s brain, seeing how it worked.

I wouldn’t say I’m jumping for joy, foaming at the mouth excited to see the next episode, but I feel compelled to watch it so I can further understand the way of the male mind.  Plus, I have grown very fond of Owen and his plight.
