With only 8 episodes remaining for the entire Dollhouse series, fans of the show should expect some great plot twists. When we left off way back in October, we learned that a powerful US senator, Daniel Perrin (Alexis Denisof), was hot on the trail of the Rossum Corporation for their subsequent involvement in the mysterious Dollhouse.
Up until this point, the closest the Dollhouse had ever been to exposure was Ballard’s arc in the first season. With the US Senate on the trail of Topher and Adelle; Caroline/Echo (Eliza Dushku) is set to play an important role. But for what side?
The Dollhouse is funded and essentially owned by the Rossum Corporation, but with the news of November/Mellie now working with Senator Perrin, exposure seems inevitable. Knowing this, Adelle and the Dollhouse in LA decide to take matters into their own hands; they will save/capture November before she has a chance to expose them. During their research of how Daniel Perrin obtained such knowledge of the Dollhouse, they are visited by one of Rossum’s major players, Matthew Harding (Keith Carradine). Harding assures Adelle and the gang that they’ve got it under control, alluding to the fact that the senator’s wife Cindy, is in fact a Doll.
So the big reveal was that Senator Daniel Perrin (Alexis Denisof) is in fact a Doll – not his controlling wife Cindy (who fittingly turned out to be his handler – interesting choice of terms there Joss). Echo (Eliza Duchku) and Daniel are being held at the DC Dollhouse under the supervision of Bennett Halverson (Summer Glau). Halverson is basically a female version of Topher, only smarter and MUCH easier on the eyes. She imprints actives, resets their brain patterns and basically controls everything with her right hand. She lost the use of her left hand in a mysterious accident involving Caroline.
The second episode of Dollhouse to air could not have come sooner. The Public Eye ended with such a tease that it would have been cruel of FOX to make us wait an entire week to see what happens…. And you know… More Summer Glau. Glau’s character Bennett Halverson was introduced at the tail end of The Public Eye and left us fans waiting to see what she’s all about and how she’ll fit into the mysterious web being sewn together by Joss Whedon and his Scooby Gang of writers. Like I said above, it’s a good thing FOX aired The Left Hand right after.
All of this was leading up to a big senate hearing where Perrin was going to expose the Dollhouse, come to power and be Rossum’s political pet. When he finally becomes aware that his brain and his life are mere imprints, he goes a bit rogue. Instead of exposing the Dollhouse, he says basically nothing. He tells the public that his key witness (November) was recently released from an mental hospital and that the Dollhouse doesn’t exist. But did it work? Has he created such a cloud around himself that there is no hope of him ever being elected? I guess we’ll have to wait another week as this is how The Left Hand ended.
This was one of the more entertaining episodes of Dollhouse that I can remember. The series has major lulls, but The Left Hand moved us through the story very quickly. So with just a few episodes remaining, we’re in the home stretch. It’s actually kind of depressing and exciting at the same time knowing the show will be gone forever in just a few weeks.
