This episode had one of the best openers of the season. Michael (Steve Carrel) reprimands Andy (Ed Helms) about his baby talk. That’s right. Andy has been reported as saying “num nums,” “make boom boom,” “Whode Iswand,” and more. As if that wasn’t funny enough, then Michael chips in with his Elvis voice, and Elvis and baby have one of the best conversations to date.
Andy has a great idea to boost morale in the office: Employee of the Month. Jim (John Krasinski) thinks it’s great, and the plans are set. But it wasn’t really Andy’s idea…it’s a scheme that Dwight (Rainn Wilson) has put into place to try to get rid of Jim.
Through Dwight’s sometimes ingenious planning, he has rigged it so that Jim will win the Employee of the Month title. And he also collects $20 from each employee that is to go to the winner of the title. In a mad attempt to show that he didn’t set up the Employee of the Month contest, Jim says that he will give the award to whoever is second on the list…and it turns out to be Pam (Jenna Fischer). Oops.
David Wallace (Andy Buckley) calls and talks to Jim about the Employee of the Month screw-up. As Dwight listens in, he’s stoked…until David starts complimenting Jim for what a great job he’s doing. Of course Jim won’t be fired! He’s the hottest dude in the Scranton branch.
But the real news at Scranton’s Dunder-Mifflin is Scott’s Tots. Apparently, ten years ago, Michael promised to pay the college tuition of a class of 3rd graders as long as they graduate from high school. And now the time has come to own up to the face that Michael doesn’t have that kind of money in the bank. After his group of Scott’s Tots perform a touching number dedicated to Michael, it’s time for Michael to tell the truth. And he does, in a hilariously stilted speech where he offers each student a laptop battery in lieu of paying for their college tuition.
So, to come to the point, I felt bad for both of our co-managers during this episode. But I still laughed at them through their awkward situations.
