Cougar Town and the Birds and the Bees

It appears that Thanksgiving has brought out the best in television this week.  Normally, I like or feel “meh” towards Cougar Town but this week had me giggling.

Thanksgiving at Jules’ house is the same as any other- lots of food, family, and drama are involved.  Travis invites his girlfriend over to the meal and, after much provocation, reveals to his mother that she may be his “first” (if you know what I mean).  He even reveals the time and place of when it might happen.  Jules decides to try and give an emergency sex talk to the couple only to embarrass everyone involved.  She tracks down Travis’ girlfriend and explains that the line between mother and friend has always been blurred with her and her son.  They talk and everything turns out OK.

While Jules is busy sticking her foot in her mouth, Grayson and Bobby finally realize that they both care about Jules romantically.  They beat each other up over it to the point where they both have cuts, bruises, and need ice packs.  The guys decide to shove the emotions way down and remain friends, which works for them I suppose.

The group all ends up sitting around the dinner while Jules gives a speech about how Thanksgiving is about family- those related and those you invite in.  It was actually quite beautiful.

I think this particular episode was the best performance I’ve seen out of this cast.  Christa Miller’s Ellie really opened up to Travis while Jules was tracking down the girlfriend.  The character has been rather one sided since the start of the show, but talking about raising her children really brought out her softer side.  Dan Byrd really brings Travis’ insecurities to the surface and shows his fragile heart ready to be possibly broken by this girl.  Bravo guys.
