The American Music Awards was a three hour parade of stars with about 30 minutes of actual awards. The show was mostly performances from all genres of music. I guess if you have a time slot to fill, this is the best way to do it. The actual awards that were given out on air totaled a meager 13.
The show was opened by Janet Jackson performing a melody of her old songs. Paula Abdul took the stage to announce the Pop/Rock duo or group. Somebody forgot to turn on the microphone. This might have been on purpose because she was slurring like crazy. The Black Eyed Peas took this category. The next category was Favorite Country Band. The winners were Rascall Flatts.
About four or five other performers took the stage then Snoop Dog and Joel Perry announced the Female Pop/Rock artist, which went to Taylor Swift. Christian Slater announced the Alternative Rock Artist as Green Day. The Soul R&B Male Artist of the Year Award went to Michael Jackson.
The Country Male Artist of the Year was given to Keith Urban. The Soul R&B Female Artist was Beyonce’. Carrie Underwood performed followed by Lady Gaga. The best thing about these performances was watching the audience. The award for the T-mobile Break-Through Artist of the Year was given to the band Glorianna. Whitney Houston was honored with the International Artist of the Year Award. Whitney is the seventh person to ever receive this award. Taylor Swift received Country Female Artist of the Year.
Michael Jackson was honored again for the award for Pop/Rock Male Artist. The Hip Hop Male Artist Award was given to Jay-Z. Taylor Swift was given her fifth award of the night, the Artist of the Year Award. We only saw three of these awards on air, which makes me wonder how many other awards we missed because we were watching some ridiculous live performances.
Adam Lambert closed the show with his debut performance. This was so disgusting, I was so happy my son had gone to bed before this aired. This was unbelievably raunchy, for a second or so I thought they were going to have to cut to commercial.
For the most part, the evening was very enjoyable with most performances being tasteful and well put together. However, there were a couple of performances I really could have gone without ever seeing.
