The_Observer_300x300Last evening’s Fringe was everything fans of the show have been waiting for. After such an amazing cliffhanger at the conclusion of the first season, we were left with a bucket load of questions. Well, after seven weeks of character-based episodes, we’re finally back on track. The latest episode of Fringe titled “August” touched on some of the major story points that this season had lacked.

Before airing, “August” was simply known as “The Observer” episode. The Observer is the mysterious bald man that can be found in at least one frame of every episode since the beginning of the series. Before last night’s episode we knew that The Observer and Walter Bishop have a special kinship, he likes to eat extremely spicy food and he is definitely from a different place and possibly time.

His technology is advanced, he can read minds and for some reason he seems to show up whenever the Fringe gang of Olivia, Peter and Walter are called upon.

August revealed even more about our albino friend, but none more than the fact that there are many “observers,” in the world. When the episode begins, Fringe fans would be able to recognize that even though The Observer, later revealed to have the name August, is dressed in a similar way, he is not The Observer we’re used to seeing. The Fringe gang figures this out quite quickly, but not before August abducts a woman and holds her hostage.

But as fans can assume, nothing should be taken at face value as it is later revealed that August abducted the woman in order to save her from inevitably dying in a plane crash. So then the episode turns from “Who is The Observer,” to “Why this girl?”

It turns out that August is one of many observers and during a brief meeting with others of his kind, it is revealed that he “interfered,” when he shouldn’t have. In a desperate attempt to keep the girl alive, August contacts Walter. It seems at this point that Walter knows more about The Observers than he is leading every one else to believe. Olivia and Peter manage to track down where the girl is being held and come face-to-face with August and the assassin. August sacrifices himself and the girl is saved, but not before a slight moment of trust between August and Peter.

But what is an episode of Fringe without a thought provoking ending? Just as the episode comes to a conclusion two observers watch Olivia in a moment of bliss. She and her niece Ella enjoy a roller coaster ride while one of the observers mentions that, “It’s a shame things are about to get worse.” Hopefully next week will bring us another episode devoted to the main arc of the season. Why is Olivia so important? What is about to get worse? And how do The Observers fit into all of this?

Can’t wait for next Thursday as season two of Fringe is now in full swing.
