On this week’s episode of Stargate Universe entitled “Time,” the Destiny finally takes the crew to a planet that has vegetation and hopefully a food source. It is a jungle teaming with plant life, but also monsters.
On the planet surface, they are gathering food for testing purposes when one of the members falls sick. At first they believe it is due to a bacteria or virus picked up on the planet surface so they are stuck on the planet until they can identify if they are contagious or not. It is a long dark and rainy night as they wait out the effects of the disease as they don’t want to take a chance on bring the disease aboard the ship which would risk infecting the entire crew of Destiny.
Suddenly, some one shouts out a death cry and there is gun fire all around.
Too late they discover that they are not alone on the planet as some type of swarm, made up of a type of two feet-long worm with fingers, attack. The monsters are everywhere tunneling into people’s chest and killing them.
The scene suddenly switches to the crew on Destiny watching the recording of them being attacked and killed. They surmise they are seeing the future caused by a time loop created by the Stargate’s wormhole passing too close to a sun during a solar flare, which sent the recording device back in time to them.
This time, the crew knows of the dangerous worm monsters, yet they also discover through the same recording that the venom from the creatures can cure the infectious disease that is killing the crew members. They discover bacteria in the drinking water they picked up back on the ice planet and that is the cause of the disease. Despite the risks, they decide they still have to return to the jungle planet in hopes of capturing one of the creatures to use it’s venom as an anti-virus against the sickness or the entire crew will die.
This was easily the best episode of the Stargate Universe series. It may be just my love of action and gun play, but this was definitely the most exciting episode to date. There was plenty of shooting, fighting monsters and desperate moments in this one episode to make up for the lack of action in all the previous shows combined.
