In this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy an old familiar face is back in Izzie Stevenson, and yes, Izzie is still doing Izzie “stuff.” This week she returns in full form bringing her old high school teacher to the hospital on a gut instinct that he has a medical condition that no one knows about, and more importantly, are not good enough to find.
Her old teacher seems to be suffering from Alzheimer’s Syndrome, where he has a mental challenge differentiating between present and past events in his life. Izzie goes home to live with her mother after being fired from the hospital only to find this beloved teacher who gave her confidence and direction as a teenager literally thrown away in a nursing home.
It is pretty obvious from her description that his doctors simply wrote his condition up as being old and felt that he had just lost his mind.
Izzie brings him to Seattle Grace to have Dr. Shepard check him out and sure enough, all the test come back normal. She threatens to reveal some personal information about the doctor who she believes helped get her fired in order to force him to run a last ditch spinal fluid test. Although at first it seems her efforts were for naught when the test comes back negative for any disease or abnormality, the man miraculously comes to his senses. He is then diagnosed as having some type of condition that causes a build up of spinal fluid in his brain, which mimics the condition of Alzheimer’s Syndrome.
In a different and stunning turn of events the Chief is back to drinking and it is implied that he is doing so heavily by the way he is seemingly oblivious and reclusive from his normal hospital duties. This does answer a lot of questions about his behavior over the last few episodes.
Cristina has a new heart surgeon to learn from, and despite her dislike for the new doctor she discovers she still doesn’t know everything and that she can still learn from this new surgeon, despite the fact that she doesn’t have a world class reputation.
Izzie and her husband Alex don’t get anything solved between them, which means there should be more drama for those two in future episodes. That is if Izzie is even going to be in any future episodes. No one knows what’s happening with Izzie anymore.
