In 1999, a gem of a comedy erupted on the television scene. It was produced by Comedy Central and called Strangers with Candy. The show chronicled the journey of 46-year-old Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris), an ex-drug addict, as she returned to high school as a freshman student.

It sounds silly, doesn’t it? Almost stupid? Well, it wasn’t. The cast was filled with comedic geniuses such as Stephen Colbert, Andy Richter, and Janeane Garofalo, among others. Jerri’s entire demeanor, from her excessive under-bite to her trying-too-hard “fashionable” clothes, is charming and hilarious. She stumbles through awkward, embarrassing and difficult situations as a high school student would, which makes Strangers with Candy a diamond in the rough.

My favorite episode features Jerri as she tries marijuana for what we are to assume is her first time (even though we know that Jerri is a former drug addict).

She turns into a glassy-eyed, stumbling pothead who can’t tell the different between a basketball and a turkey.

Although the television show only lasted three seasons, it was still a success—so much so that a film was released in 2005 that served as a prequel to the series.

While Strangers with Candy might not be everyone’s cup of tea, there is a select population of people who are in love with Jerri Blank and all that she represents. And I am a proud member of this group.
