If you grew up in the 1980s as I did, then you have a soft spot in your heart for a few select 1980s television shows. One of my favorite 1980s shows is—and will probably always be—Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

The kid’s television show ran from 1986 through 1991 with great success. Pee-wee’s Playhouse follows Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) and his buddies (notably including Phil Hartman as Captain Carl, Natasha Lyonne as Opal, and Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis) as they go through adventure after adventure.

All of us kids remember how fantastic Pee-wee’s home was. He had a big blue easy chair that could talk, a globe that could talk, a clock that could talk…I think you get the point.

On top of all of these talking furnishings, Pee-wee was friends with a pterodactyl and had a genie’s head in the closet for when he was having a really rough day.

But Pee-wee’s Playhouse wasn’t just a favorite of the kids. Adults could get into the fun with Pee-wee’s cynical and sometimes naughty humor (thankfully, the naughty humor went right over my head when I was a child). Because of the character’s incredible popularity, Pee-wee went on to star in several movies and appear on various shows including Saturday Night Live.

And even though the actor portraying Pee-wee has been arrested twice for some not-so-terrific things (in 1991 for publicly masturbating in an adult film theater and in 2002 for child pornography, among other things), he and Pee-wee’s Playhouse will always have a soft spot in my heart.
