It’s been said that being a lawyer is a recession proof profession. This isn’t the case anymore and layoffs happen even in The Good Wife’s world. Everyone at her office is on the chopping block. How can Alicia stay in the game?
Firm partner Mr. Sterns has a daughter named Anna who’s being sued. Will puts Alicia on the case hoping she’ll impress Mr. Sterns and he won’t have to include her in the layoffs. Alicia expects to find the notorious party-girl, but Anna’s converted to Orthodox Judaism after marrying her husband, Issac. Alicia is brought in to co-council the case with a no-name lawyer that Isaac has hired named Ryan.
The Eruv wire fell on their property that they didn’t repair because it was the Sabbath. A woman was walking to the store and tripped on the wire and is now suing the Loebs for $1.2 million for negligence.
The wire is strung up to give the Orthodox Jews a community center where some work can be done (like carrying babies and such). The co-council, Ryan, wants to play the religion card and try the case as a First Amendment violation. On the stand, the prosecution shows phone records of Anna calling her father secretly on the Sabbath several times during that year. Since she used an electronic device on God’s day of rest, the religion card for the defense goes out the window and Isaac is hurt.
While looking for evidence, Kalinda discovers cameras all over the area surrounding the Loebs’ house. Community cameras were installed days before the accident, but not activated until after. Ryan finds evidence of one of the camera company workers calling the woman who fell several times before the accident. He denies it on the stand, even with the hard evidence in his face.
As the case wraps up, Kalinda pulls Alicia outside to tell her that Ryan may have never taken the bar test. Alicia tells Kalinda to go on a walk so she’s not next to her when she finds out if he did. The jury goes to decide and Alicia tells Ryan that he needs to expose himself as a fraud to the judge or she will. The jury decides in favor of the Loebs and Alicia walks out on Ryan.
While Alicia’s dealing with Ryan, his unorthodox ways of doing things and his constant flirting attempts, Alicia’s son Zach is out on a search for the woman in his father’s scandal pictures. He finds her on a website and steals his grandmother’s credit card in order to call her and get information. His grandmother catches him on the phone with the girl, who turns out not to be the one he’s looking for, and Alicia confronts him. He takes the rap for the call, but hides the pictures still.
This week was jammed with tension and I felt it the whole time. I was so proud of Alicia for turning down Ryan’s advances! Tune in next week when, in order to save her husband, Alicia has to tell the courts she wants him to come home.
