In the latest episode of Stargate Universe entitled “Earth,” the scientists at the IOA have come up with a plan to get the lost in space crew back to Earth. The plan involves flying the Destiny back into a sun and use the ship as a conduit to tap into that sun’s solar energy. They believe this will provide enough power to the Stargate aboard the Destiny to successfully dial back to Earth. The only problem is that Dr. Rush believes the plan doesn’t stand a chance of working and it will ultimately blow up the ship.

Despite the risks, General O’Neill and Home World Command orders Col. Young to follow through with the plan but Col.

Young hesitates as he wants to put the plan before the crew to allow them a voice on whether or not they want to risk their lives to make an attempt to get home using this high risk plan.

While Young, Eli and Chloe use the communication stones to visit Earth and see their loved ones, the IOA puts Col. Telford in command of Destiny and orders him to execute the plan.  Dr. Rush is convinced by Camile Wray to help the operation to better insure success.

As they fly the ship into the sun and build up power they attempt to use the Stargate to dial Earth, but the operation goes wrong and the system builds up an overload of power that they can’t shut down. With the ship on the brink of exploding, Col. Telford and his team abandon ship by breaking the connection to Earth with the communication stones, which returns their consciousness to their own bodies back on earth.

After they are gone, Dr. Rush shuts down the Stargate and explains that he had set up the mock overload simply to get Col. Telford and his team off the ship. He tells the crew they were never in any danger, yet now no one knows if the plan to get them home would have worked or not. Col. Young, not trusting of Rush’s motives, orders Eli to check behind Rush’s calculation to see if the plan really would have failed if executed or if they were being lied to.

This was another solid episode of Stargate Universe that continues to build on the inner strife between the crew of Destiny and the tension between the command center back on Earth.
