Rue McClanahan was hospitalized on November 4, 2009, to undergo bypass surgery after doctors diagnosed the 75-year-old actress with acute cardiac illness during a routine check-up Monday. McClanahan’s press representative announced today that the surgery went off without a hitch, and the actress was is expected to make a full recovery. She is currently recovering in a New York hospital, and doctors expect to release her within a week.
McClanahan, who is probably best known for her role as sexy senior, Blanche Devereaux, on the NBC television sitcom, The Golden Girls, was forced to cancel her appearance at “Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan” in San Francisco, California, on November 14th. McClanahan announced that it was with regret that she had to cancel her appearance at the tribute, for she would much rather be among her fans and admirers than in the hospital having surgery. On the other hand, she appeared to be in good spirits, and grateful that the doctors caught the illness in time.
During the 48 year span of her acting career, McClanahan has acted in more then 119 television films and series, as well as big screen films. She’s made appearances on a number television shows, including Mama’s Family, Charles in Charge, Newhart, The Love Boat, Law and Order and Murphy Brown. She is scheduled to resume filming on an undisclosed project in January 2010.
