Cougar Town, Where Jules Can’t Face the Music

Jules is constantly surrounded by people and she can’t stand being alone.  In this week’s Cougar Town, Grayson bets Jules $20 that she can’t spend an entire day by herself after he catches her finishing up a date with a much older gentleman to avoid an evening alone.

She takes the bet and there’s a montage of her doing things to spend the time.  She sorts her change, she plays dress up, cuts up the dress she dressed up in, then sorts her change in the dress she cut up.  Only 20 minutes have passed and Jules is bored.  She goes swimming in her backyard pool only to find an alligator on her grass.  She calls Andy, Ellie’s husband, to get rid of it and he manages to spook it out of the yard through a hole in the fence.  He sneaks out of the yard so Grayson won’t see him while Jules goes to pick up Laurie.

Meanwhile, Ellie and Andy are having marital troubles.  Andy feels that Ellie doesn’t respect him because she never thanks him for doing anything for her, even if it is just cleaning his whiskers out of the sink.  Andy becomes depressed and starts avoiding his wife just as much as she avoids him.

Back at Jules’ house, the group has decided to have a “Barbecue Saturday” and Bobby fires up the grill.  Grayson shows up strumming his guitar and smiles when he sees Bobby, Andy, Jules, and Travis all hanging out.  Jules invites him to stay for barbecue but he decides to be a loner and leaves.

Bobby goes over to talk to Ellie and explains how Andy’s feeling.  He shows remorse for how his relationship with Jules went and shares a bit of himself with Ellie.  She gets it and thanks Andy for taking care of her in front of everyone at the barbecue.  Andy and Ellie have an “Awww” moment that makes everyone smile.  After much encouragement from the guys, Grayson, sans guitar,  eventually comes over with beer for the barbecue and they all have a blast.

In a television world full of multiple incarnations of CSI, NCIS, and other cop and bad guy shows, Cougar Town is a nice breath of fresh air.  It’s goofy and doesn’t try to take itself seriously.  I enjoy its cuteness.
