On this week’s episode of NCIS Gibbs is called out to a military harbor in San Diego after his boat mysteriously floats in with two dead bodies onboard. Gibbs reluctantly confirms that he sailed the boat to Mexico where he left it as a present for his god-daughter. They go to Mexico to find his former mentor Mike Franks, but Franks, his daughter in law and his granddaughter are nowhere to be found. Throughout the investigation Gibbs is reluctant to believe his old mentor turned into a murderer despite the mounting evidence that seemed to prove otherwise.
After returning from Mexico Franks shows up at Gibbs’ house with his daughter in law, Leyla, who is Frank’s deceased son’s wife and his granddaughter. Frank confesses to killing the two men believing them to be bounty hunters sent to kill him by Leyla’s mother. He goes as far as writing the confession down on paper until the forensic evidence proves he is lying about what happen back in Mexico.
We later discover the two dead men worked for a private military company who was contracted out to by Leyla’s mother, Shada, a powerful tribal leader in Iraq, to kidnap and bring back her daughter and granddaughter to Iraq. As the episode continues Leyla’s mother has flown in from the Middle East and is brought in for questioning. She confirms that she did hire the men who were killed, but only to save them from Frank, who had kidnapped them.
After all is said and done Shada, who had seen almost everyone in her family killed, was simply trying to extend an “olive branch” to her daughter, who she had disowned, in an attempt to re-establish a relationship with her and her granddaughter. During their talk Frank reveals that it was Leyla who shot and killed the men when she saw them approaching her daughter with their guns drawn. She was merely protecting her daughter and in turn Frank made up his story in an attempt to protect his daughter-in-law.
This was a good episode of NCIS that really delved into the personal life of Gibbs and revealed his commitment and loyalty to his friends and family. Although there was less gun play in this episode, the mystery and twists were great and kept me pulled into uncovering what really went on.
