We start out by witnessing Dunder-Mifflin’s Scranton branch leading a cartful of kids through a very tame Haunted House. Costumes include: a pumpkin, FaceBook, a black widow spider, and a reenactment of Saturday Night Live’s “Dick in a Box”. But then all goes awry when Michael (Steve Carell) pulls a suicide stunt that would be absolutely terrifying to a group of 8-year-olds. Have I mentioned how much I love Halloween?
Michael is having a hard time adjusting to having Jim (John Krasinski) as a co-manager, and he is tickled when a customer requests Michael accompany Jim on a sales call. Michael shifts into hyper-manager role and even goes as far as to recommend that Jim change watches before the sales call.
When the dynamic duo returns from their sales call, Michael is soaking wet.
The entire office has only one question: “What the hell happened?” Soon, the words “koi pond” leak out, and the truth must come out: Michael fell into the koi pond located in the lobby of the office building. For the next few hours, Michael has to put up with jabs from all of the staff—and he gets tired of it fast.
In response, Michael holds an impromptu Sensitivity Training course for the whole staff…needless to say, it goes horribly wrong. However, it does give us great insights to the Dunder-Mifflin staff’s insecurities such as Dwight’s (Rainn Wilson) small nose and the fact that Angela (Angela Kinsey) eats like a squirrel.
Jim feels for Michael and gives him a tip: make fun of yourself, and others won’t mock you so much. It’s going really well until Michael simply takes it too far by spilling all of his embarrassing moments and making himself overly vulnerable. While this may be sad for Michael, it creates a load of laughs for us. So I say—keep going, Michael!
But the focus gets shifted after the group gets a hold of a recorded copy of Michael’s koi pond dive. As we all watch, we see Jim noticeably jump back when Michael slips instead of reaching out to help prevent his fall. Seeing Jim struggle in his embarrassment made me giggle. I love Jim, but I think I love watching him squirm more.
On the other side of the office, Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Andy (Ed Helms) are required to go on cold calls since they were the lowest-producing members on the sales team. Naturally, every place they stop takes one look at Pam’s baby bump and assumes that they are a happy couple who’s expecting.
After spending a couple of calls denying the fact, they decide to just roll with it. What follows is both hilarious and slightly disturbing: an inappropriately long, lingering belly kiss delivered from an overly-excited Andy to Pam’s emerging belly. Unfortunately, they don’t land the sale, but they do come to a better understanding of each other after a heart-to-heart.
I didn’t love this episode as much as last week’s, but I’m still happy overall with the way this season’s going. Keep it up, The Office!
