America Haunts 4 explores five great haunted houses from California to Louisiana. The team from the Travel Channel talks to the owners and creators of these terrifying Halloween attractions. We even got to see behind the scenes of the world’s longest haunted house.
The Haunted Hotel, San Diego, CA
This haunted hotel is 130 years old and has been transformed into a creepy haunted house. The haunted house is located in the club district of San Diego. This allows actors to scare people on the street and lure them into the haunted house. It’s famous for wide open rooms and the subway section.
The House of Torment, Austin, TX
This haunted attraction has two haunted houses.
One is a themed house that changes yearly, while the other is what they call “Illusion Manor.” Illusion Manor is a house full of slanted rooms and odd happenings. The other themed area that changes yearly is an “in your face” type of haunted house. They use stunts and wires to make actors move in unnatural ways.
The 13th Gate, Baton Rouge, LA
This voodoo themed haunted house is full of bizarre and twisted scenes. They have a swamp with animatronic alligators and real live snakes. The building they use is 150 years old and was at one time a brick making company using slave labor.
Nightmare on the Bayou, Houston, TX
The owners of this haunted house also own a costume shop next door. The haunted house is located adjacent to the oldest cemetery in Houston, which is said to be haunted. They use motion censors to time the scares just right. This haunted attraction is fully equipped with vampires, insane people, ghouls and goblins.
The Cutting Edge, Fort Worth, TX
This old meat packing plant is in the Genius Book of World Records for the longest haunted house in the world. The 235,000 square foot building was built in 1908 and many of the meat processing machines are used in the haunted house as props. This gigantic scare palace has 170 people working behind the scenes. The actors in this attraction use the old school approach to scaring. None of them speak.
Every single one of these haunted houses gave me the willies. If you are looking for a great Halloween experience, any of these haunted houses will make a great choice. So get ready, grab your defibrillator, and take a trip into the minds of mad men.
