Twilight Zone 600x300“There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. … This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” This is one of the most epic lines in a TV series to date. The first time I heard it was late one night when I was about 12. It was in syndication on one of the three channels we could get with our antenna. I was immediately captivated and still love the show to this day.

The Twilight Zone was so much more than just another TV Show. In a time when Science Fiction TV shows were almost unheard of, The Twilight Zone was there. Airing from 1959 to 1964, the show had 156 episodes that are still in syndication.

The writing on this show was insightful, scary and some of the best writing on TV.

The Twilight Zone was created by Rod Serling, who wrote 92 of the episodes himself. Although you may not know Serling’s face, his voice is infamous. He was the shows host and provided the narrations at the beginning and end of each episode.

The Twilight Zone was able to create a show where the cast changed every week. Each week we saw a unique story about aliens, the paranormal, the future or just plain disturbing events. At the end of each show we would discover that the story had a moral. My favorite episode is “The Private World Of Darkness” or “The Eye of the Beholder,” in which a woman has a surgery to make her normal. The surgery is a failure. She is beautiful but in her world it is considered ugly.

This show has inspired a feature film, a second series, music, comic books, an amusement park ride and much more. It was nominated for many awards and the show received two Golden Globes and an Emmy. The show had countless guest stars that include Art Carney, William Shatner, Carol Burnet and Mickey Rooney, just to name a few.

The Syfy Chanel still runs the original shows, in syndication. CBS also offers quite a few episodes for free, online. Even though the episodes have been seen many times, people are still tuning in to watch the creepy tales of The Twilight Zone. The show is often seen as scary, but I was never  scared as much as I was intrigued.
