On this week’s episode of Criminal Minds the team tackles a case involving women being kidnapped and used to produce babies. The episode begins with a young woman giving birth inside of a dark and dank room that looks like some type of homemade jail cell. When the young woman is later found dead and it is discovered that she has recently given birth, the Criminal Minds team initially assume that they have stumbled onto a black market baby selling ring.

As the evidence is further examined, they discover that other women have been killed in a similar manner but the killer doesn’t follow the normal patterns of a serial killer or a crime cartel operative. They stumble upon a clue that the girl babies are being dropped off at certain churches, and although many they are miles apart the churches are of the same denomination.

This leads the investigator to narrow the search even further, but what actually gets them to the criminals is when they discover that the dead woman was given a type of prenatal drug cocktail that made her more likely to get pregnant. They also realize that all the girls that have been missing, including those found dead, had blond hair and blue eyes.

This evidence eventually leads them to the home of the couple that has been abducting, impregnating and killing these women.  The wife of the man is dying of cancer and also lost her own child at the 8th month of pregnancy. She couldn’t have children of her own, therefore she and her husband began kidnapping women and getting them pregnant so they could replace the son she lost.

A major shift in the hierarchy of the show took place as the episode concluded, when Hotchner informed Derek that he was stepping down as the leader of the team in order to appease their superiors. However, Hotchner is not leaving the team.  In fact, he believes the only way to keep the unit together is for Derek to take leadership in his place.

This was another intriguing episode of Criminal Minds, having a seemingly unbreakable crime puzzle to solve while the evidence they uncovered inevitable drew them a map to the deranged individuals committing the crimes.
