Let’s face it, unless you live under a rock, you know about American Idol and chances are you have seen at least one episode. American Idol is one of the most popular reality/ talent shows of this generation.  Using American Idol for a costume theme is great idea for men or women of all ages.  The costumes are simple, inexpensive and easy to throw together at the last minute.

Dress up as a contestant

You can choose a specific contestant that you love and find clothes and wigs for that person or you can choose a more simple approach.  I prefer the simpler approach. This costume can be put together in minutes.

All you have to do is pick out clothes. These can be crazy like some contestants or just dressy. Print out a piece of paper about three inches square with the American Idol logo and a random number. Pin or tape the paper to your shirt. Get a toy microphone and walk around singing.

Dress up as Randy Jackson

For this costume, you need black slacks that are neatly pressed and a button up shirt. Gold earrings and jewelry, along with a pair of glasses will set the costume off.

Dress like Simon Cowell

Simon only needs a black pair of paint and black tee shirt. The thing that will make this costume work is attitude.  The “I’m better than you and I know it” attitude makes this costume great.

Dress like Paula Abdul

Paula has a classic sense of style. A great cocktail dress and sensible jewelry will make this costume work.  You could walk around and act like you’re drunk as a skunk.

With most of these costumes, the attitude is what will make the costume. You could get a small cardboard square just big enough to encircle a microphone and paint it like the logo. Get a microphone and use the square on the microphone to pull the costumes together.
