In the third episode of Stargate Universe entitled “Darkness,” the power aboard the spacecraft Destiny is just about used up. Systems all over the ship are shutting down as the power supply continues to steadily decline and the problem is no one really understands why it is happening.
The episode opens with Colonel Young briefing the crew on the water shortage aboard the ship along with the food shortage. The most remarkable event in the opening scene is when Dr. Rush walks into the room 20 minutes late. The meeting is immediately dismissed and the two leaders have a heated exchange.
It turns out that Dr. Rush has been working throughout the night trying to solve the mystery behind the ship’s rapidly declining power reserves. At this point he is the only one who truly understands how desperate their situation is.
More than that, he feels the weight of being the only one who understands enough of the ancient technology to possibly do something about it.
Disgusted by the off handed use of the already dwindling energy reserves he goes through the ship demanding that the crew stop turning on systems merely for investigative purposes, something Young gave them permission to do. Rush then heatedly reiterates his concerns to Colonel Young, and makes him fully aware of the crisis. Young then commands the crew to limit their power consumption to only the essentials.
Unexpectedly all the ships system shut down, all except basic life support. Stressed from withdrawal symptoms from both caffeine and nicotine, Dr. Rush declares that everyone will die within days and there is nothing they can do about it. But when Destiny’s flight path puts them in range of a solar system with three planets, their only hope is that one of the planets is habitable.
Stargate Universe is still establishing itself; there are a lot of characters that we have to learn their mannerisms in order to better appreciate the show’s writing. This is a much different series than Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis because the show has more of a Lost In Space feel to it. The drama to behind the crew learning how to coexist in order to survive is there, but I wouldn’t be too upset with at least one big bad boogie man written into the script.
