Tonight’s “Throwdown” episode of Glee should more aptly be called “Blackmail and the Race Card.” Devilish cheerleader-coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and the ever-patient and kind Spanish teacher, Will Scheuster (Matthew Morrison), have it out in an outlandish battle, as they struggle for control as co-directors of Glee. To get an idea of what I mean, Sues’s exact words (in her head) are, “It feels good to finally pop the zit, that is Will Scheuster!”
Sue realizes that race is the key to driving the Glee kids apart, and makes a point of taking the Asian, black, handicapped and gay kids under her control as she accuses Will of bigotry.
Will fights back by flunking the cheerleaders that should have failed Spanish class long ago, had it not been for Sue blackmailing the principal.
Meanwhile, Quinn’s (Dianna Agron) pregnancy is about to be outed by the school newspaper reporter, until Rachel (Lea Michele) steps in to deliver her panties to him, in fulfillment of his blackmail conditions.
And finally, Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) and her sister blackmail Terri’s OB-GYN into pretending that he is performing an ultrasound on a baby, in front of the unsuspecting Will, to hide the fact that Terri has been faking her pregnancy all along. Oh yes, and the boy baby she told Will that she was carrying, conveniently became a girl, so that it would match the sex of the baby that Quinn intends to give to Terri to raise as her own.
The contorted plots almost drowned out the music tonight, despite the fact that there were several songs and performances. But I have to say, I actually got chills when Rachel started belting out Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown’s “No Air.” What a moment! (Oh, and if the Gleeks keep up these great performances, a live tour may become a reality.)
