In the latest episode of Criminal Minds entitled “Hopeless,” the BAU are called in to help capture a trio of killers that seem to commit murder just for the sport of it. At first their attacks seem to have no pattern and nothing links the victims to one another, which has the Criminal Minds team totally baffled. There is nothing being stolen from the victims as well, and there is no sexual assault being committed. There basically appears to be no rhyme or reason to these senseless acts of aggression.
In the opening moments of the show we see a bloodied man being pushed into his friends’ home where his wife and the couple seem to be playing some type of game at a kitchen table.
When the man stands up from the table and comes around the corner he is blindsided by a metal bar crushing him to the floor. From there the criminals proceed to taunt and then bash all of their victims to death with the metal bar, all the while laughing as one of their members records the massacre on camcorder.
The small town’s teenagers decide to protest and riot a particular section of town. I believe this was because their small community was being pushed out by high dollar upscale homes and businesses. Because this demonstration got front page coverage in the local newspaper, these three murderers get upset and decide to go out and murder a man in a bar along with the bartender. The customer is beaten to death, while the bartender’s hand is first nailed into the bar before he is killed. This gives the Criminal Minds team a clue as to who these mean are and where they can find them.
While the investigation is ongoing, Derek, played by Shemar Moore, appears to take personal and emotional interest in the very beautiful sister of one of the victims. Salli Richardson-Whitfield of Eureka fame guest stars to play the role of the distraught sister.
The three criminals are finally tracked down. One is captured at the home the three shared together while the other two choose suicide by cop at the location of their last work site.
This was one of those episodes that made you shake your head at the senselessness of it all, especially when you relate this type of brutality to the news you hear almost every day in the real world. Here’s a look at next week’s episode…
