In part two of the Stargate Universe episode entitled: “Air,” the life support system on Destiny, the ship the team is marooned on, is failing and they must find a particular mineral they hope will cleanse the air of carbon monoxide before it builds up to lethal levels. The ship has jumped out of hyperspace for twelve hours near a world that will provide them with the mineral they need, but it will automatically jump away after that time whether they are able to find what they need or not.

An away team goes through the Stargate only to find themselves in the middle of a desert with no way to discover where the important mineral is located so they have to walk across the desert to find it.

During this time some of the crew aboard the ship are able to change bodies with people back on earth using a special type of communication device created by the Ancients. Chloe, the daughter of the Senator who gave his life  to save the crew, sends her consciousness back home to let her mother know that he has died.  Her distraught mother then threatens to expose everything she knows about the government’s cover up of the Stargate project if her daughter doesn’t make it home safely.

During this time, Lt. Scott decides to go at it alone in the desert to find the mineral when Dr. Rush is physically incapable of going on. With the help of some type of dust devil, for lack of a better term, he is able to locate the mineral before he collapses from heat exhaustion. He is rescued and the mineral is brought back to the ship before it can jump away into hyperspace and the life support system is repaired – at least for a while.

This episode of  Stargate Universe is still laying the foundation about the characteristics and backgrounds of the characters. This series shows a lot of promise with some tense moments, but so far is lacking some of the fast-paced action sequences that made its predecessors so enjoyable.
