The Syfy channel’s hit television series Sanctuary got its start over the Internet airing eight episode on a type of pay-per-view basis back in early 2007. Because of the success of the Internet version of the show, the Syfy Channel decided to pick up the series for 13 episodes that first aired on October 3, 2008, both in Canada and in the US.

With more than 3 million viewers, the premiere of Sanctuary was the highest rated original Syfy Channel series since Eureka debuted back in July of 2006. The series was renewed in 2009 for a second season with 13 brand new episodes.

The show is based around Dr.

Helen Magnus played by Amanda Tapping of the Stargate SG1 franchise fame. Dr Magnus is a 157 year old English scientist who injected herself with a vial of pure vampire blood which has caused her not to age. She and her team of experts run the Sanctuary, which is an organization that goes after creatures they call Abnormals.

In this season’s first episode we find out why Dr. Magnus’ daughter Ashley was abducted. Because she is the only offspring of two source blood Abnormals, her captors are able to use the source blood to transform her into a superhuman assassin.

Throughout the show the team follows clues throughout different parts of the world trying to find Ashley. Along the way they discover that her captors are sending her on stealth missions to steal data about seven people with perfect DNA that have no abnormalities whatsoever.  The Sanctuary team tries to figure out why they would want these people with perfect DNA.

They finally get a lead that Ashley’s captors have a secret location just north of the US border. The team supernaturally jumps to a warehouse in Canada where the new, dangerous Ashley tries to kill them.

At the end the show the Sanctuary team realizes that Ashley was the first model of their new breed of supernatural killers and that the people with the perfect DNA were needed because they were like blank slates they could use to copy more assassins like Ashley.

In the final scene we discover that these supernatural killers were created specifically to destroy the Sanctuary. This was a very fast paced, action packed episode that kept you guessing almost to the very end. Part two of the second season’s opening episode promises to be even more action packed.
