Eye of newt and wing of bat, that’s where spooky TV is at, and over the years, television has presented us with some pretty amazing witches. Rarely warty and obnoxious, as history would dictate, but devastatingly beautiful and charming, these witchy women may just take your breath away and use it in some strange potion to ensure everlasting life in re-run heaven.
The Ladies of Bewitched
Samantha Stevens (Elizabeth Montgomery) and her mother Endora were just two of the many witches to appear during the eight year run of ABC’s Bewitched. There was also Samantha’s magically aloof and often dingy Aunt Clara, her sexy and outlandish cousin, Serena and the fun-loving, but careless Esmerelda. During the series, Samantha and her husband Darrin also gave birth to a daughter, Tabitha, who proved to be as magically ambitious and headstrong as her mother, and eventually won herself a short-lived spin-off series called Tabitha.
Witches on Crime
For two seasons on the TNT network, the popular comic series-turned film, Witchblade, explored the life and powers of gorgeous NYPD homicide detective, Sara Pezzini (Yancy Butler). Empowered by the Witchblade, a supernatural artifact that grants Pezzini magical powers that include healing, flight and protection, she is a force to be reckoned with in the field. While Pezzini may not be considered a witch in the traditional sense of the word, there’s no denying her power and beauty, therefore scoring her a place within the Witches Hall of Fame (or is that shame?)
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
In 1996, ABC aired another witchy series, starring Melissa Joan Hart (of Clarissa Explains it All fame,) as sixteen year old Sabrina Spellman, a girl who learns on her sixteenth birthday that she’s been blessed (or cursed, as it may often seem,) with magical powers. Taken under the wing of her witchy aunts, Zelda and Hilda, the quirkiness of the show made it a fun series for tweens and teens that spanned seven seasons and 163 episodes.
Buffy and the Witches
During the seven season run of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the series dabbled in the craft from time to time, from technopagan teacher Ms. Calendar to Willow (Allison Hannigan) and Tara, who often use magic to help slayer, Buffy, in the fight against evil. Whedon explored witchcraft as early as season one, exploring a strange girl’s obsession with cheerleading, who is later discovered to have been possessed by her witch mother, so the woman can relive her high school years after the girl’s father leaves them.
The Halliwell Sisters
Aaron Spelling’s Charmed, which aired on the WB network from 1998 until 2006, was home to four of TVs sexiest witches of all-time, the Halliwell sisters. Piper, Pru, Phoebe and later Paige, discover after the death of their grandmother that they are to take on the family tradition and become “The Charmed Ones,” gifted magical protectors with special powers to help them battle the forces of darkness. From the very first episode of Charmed, which debuted to more than seven-million viewers, the series captivated audiences worldwide, and the sexy sisters’ adventures spanned eight seasons, ending with a satisfied, yet disappointed sigh from Charmed lovers everywhere.
Over the years, television has definitely improved the outlook on witchcraft. Considering the old Looney Tunes cartoons that featured haggard, wart-nosed, green-skinned crones as the prime suspect, evolution has done wonders for the witch’s complexion. One only needs to take a look at Samantha Stephens and the Halliwell sisters to see that while witches may be thought of as wicked, most of the time, they have the world’s best interest at heart.

Great article! I managed to catch a few episodes of Charmed when it was on but never got in to it. Buffy, on the other hand, has always been one of my all-time favorites. I LOVED evil Willow witch. Such a bad ass!
