Do you know if your father-in-law cares for you? Does it ever bother you? We tackle this issue in this week’s Modern Family as Phil tries to befriend Jay while Claire battles with Alex over attire and Mitchell discovers the wonders of Costco.
After trying to make friends with Haley’s boyfriend, Dylan, Claire points out to Phil that guys aren’t comfortable with their fathers-in-law. Phil, determined to prove her wrong, goes over to Jay’s house and helps him make a model airplane. Jay feels Phil tries too hard and is irritated by his efforts. Jay accidentally hits Phil with his plane while trying to “thread the needle” (fly the plane through a hoop Phil was holding) and then has to take the broken and bleeding Phil home.
While Phil is off with Jay, Claire is dealing with her own problems. Alex, her middle daughter, refuses to wear a dress to Claire’s friend’s wedding. Gloria offers to take Alex shopping when she drops off Manny to play with Luke. Manny, instead of playing, ends up talking with Claire and counseling her to understand her daughter’s feelings. Through his help, Claire decides to let Alex be herself. Alex though has decided to wear the dress after an outing with Gloria. Gloria helps Alex come to terms with her own beauty. Claire feels Alex’s change of heart is provocation and Manny rolls his eyes.
Meanwhile, Cameron (fabulous!) introduces Mitchell to the wonders of Costco. Mitchell is rather snobbish when it comes to buying things and turns his nose up at the store, but quickly becomes enamored with its low prices and large selection. Cam gets this great victorious smile across his face while Mitchell goes crazy over the savings.
It all accumulates with everyone at Claire and Phil’s house. Claire confronts Jay on the way he treats Phil and Gloria is appalled that Jay’s never told his son-in-law that he loves him. Jay goes over and tells Phil he’s a good guy and that he shouldn’t try so hard. Phil hugs Jay as Mitchell and Cam walk in, bringing gifts of olives from Costco. Jay tells Cam he likes him too and Cameron and Manny join in on one giant group hug on Jay.
This week’s show was awesome. There are parts where you’ll hold your sides because you’re laughing so hard and yet you still can relate to what’s going on. Fantastic!

Oh goodness, me too! I adore Mitchell and Cam. They remind me of this couple my mom was friends with while I was growing up. So cute!
