Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge is the second installment of the Halloweentown series. This movie starts out two years after the original Halloweentown. Aggie (Debbie Renoylds),  Marnie, Sophie and the other Pipers are living in the mortal world. They have a huge Halloween party for all the neighbors.

Someone is watching Marnie and Sophie feels like someone is coming. Two new neighbors show up to crash the party, Alex and his son Cal. Alex immediately is drawn to the mom and Cal is attracted to Marnie. Cal asks for a tour of the house. Smitten, Marnie  takes him around even into their grandmother’s room. When Aggie’s bag loses magic, Marnie and Aggie travel back to Halloweentown. But it is different, everything is gray and boring, even the people. All the monsters are turning into gray humans. The jack-o-lantern is just a big concrete block.

They run across Luke and try to figure the grayness out. It is a spell and Aggie needs her spell book to undo it. When they try to open a portal their magic does not work. They call Sophie back in the human world, only to find out the book was stolen by Cal. Cal is Kalabar’s son and he wants revenge on the Cromwells.

They go to Aggie’s house to find another copy of the book, but it is nowhere to be found. As they talk and Luke turns back, they realize the book is lost and head to Gort’s house where all the lost items end up. Aggie, Luke and Marnie are locked in the house and Aggie turns gray. Marnie and Luke use a time traveling spell to go back through time to find the book.

Back on Earth, Cal is planning to turn all the humans into the characters they dressed up as at a dance. Sophie discovers that Alex is a golem made from frogs and she and Dylan try to go warn their mom, who is at the dance with Alex. They finally convince her and she turns him back into a pile of frogs. She has a nasty witch mask on when she tries to take it off Cal sees and makes it permanently stick.

In Halloweentown, Luke and Marnie discover that the gray spell is simply”a part.” If you say it backwards it is “trap a.”  They save Aggie and try to head back but midnight passes and they miss the portal. At the dance, Cal has turned everyone into creatures and Chaos is erupting.

The whole family works together, with the help of Luke, to open another portal. Marnie, Aggie and Luke come to the human world and Marnie faces off with Cal to get the books back. The world is saved and they returned to Halloweentown to fix the gray spell, even Dylan casts a spell or two.

Halloweentown 2 is a fun wholesome story that the entire family can enjoy. The special effects are pretty good for a made for TV movie and the plot is interesting, even for adults.
