The new science fiction series, Stargate Universe debuted on October 2, 2009, on the Syfy Channel with well over 2 million viewers tuning in to see the first episode.  If the first episode entitled “Air” is any indication of how good the episodes to come will be then this promises to be an outstanding new series for the Syfy Channel.

Part of the first episode was wrapped around solving the mystery of the ninth icon on  the Stargate. The Stargate team had unsuccessfully tried to solve the mystery as to how to get the ninth icon to lock  in order to create a wormhole. Part of the mystery to discover where that ninth combination would take you. Discovering these answers seems to be the single minded goal of Dr. Nicholas Rush – the ship’s brilliant Machiavellian scientist  played by Robert Carlyle.

The mathematical problem was solved by a young, brainy “slacker” who, though highly intelligent, isn’t very ambitious or self motivated.

The core of the Stargate Universe storyline appears to be set on a spaceship named Destiny. Apparently, several of these huge unmanned ships were sent out by the Ancients before they learned to ascend out of bodily form.  These ships were designed to seed the galaxy with Stargates, however, Destiny was specifically designed for the Ancients to board using the very Stargate system itself, once it was deep enough into space.

The series begins when a team of soldiers and scientists from present-day Earth stepping through the stargate and onto Destiny.  They were just able to escape before their base was destroyed after being attacked. However, once on board they discover that they are unable to change the course of the spaceship as its path was preset by the Ancients.

With the life support systems failing they discover that the ship will stop for briefs periods when they come near planets that have a Stargate.  If they hope to survive and make it home safely, they must travel aboard Destiny until they come to a planet that has the technology to help them repair this ancient vessel.

I thought first episode of Stargate Universe was able to keep just enough of the original Stargate series intact to ensure that it remained consistent with its roots, yet with the storyline leaving the cast dependent on a nomadic vessel, it keeps the door wide open for their own genuinely unique adventures.

Here’s a peek at next week’s episode…
