The pilot episode of the new ABC comedy, Hank, is a great starting point for a long running sitcom. The basic premise of this show is a family who has lost everything and has to move back to small town life. Hank, the title character, is played by Kelsey Grammer.
The episode starts with the family watching all of their belongings being loaded into a moving truck. The family consists of the father Hank, wife Tilly, daughter Madeline, and son Henry. All the members of this family have some weird characteristic about them. Hank was a work obsessed business man, until he lost everything in a take over.
Tilly has quirky nick names for her children. Maddy is a disrespectful teen. Henry is about 10 years old, talks to himself and often imitates Yoda. I hate to say it, but the writers of this show may have my son’s room bugged.
The family moves to Virginia, into a house that Hank’s brother-in-law has set up for him. The house is in much need of repair and Henry thinks his room is haunted. Hank treats his family like a corporation and does not understand when things don’t go his way. He holds a family meeting like a business meeting. This man has obviously never spent much time with his children. He would have been laughed out of my house too.
This episode was basically setting up the story. We saw all of the characters interacting with each other and moving into the new house. One of the best parts of this episode was when the children tell Hank he has to sing the National Anthem to get Henry to go to sleep. This was just above Rosanne Barr singing the National Anthem. The brother-in-law owns a construction business and promises to do repairs on the house, which will probably bring Hank a lot of grief.
