SeinfeldThe top television shows of the 1990s began with some fantastic carryovers from the 1980s. Cheers, Cosby Show and Roxanne started the new decade being the top shows as ranked by the Nielsen Ratings.

Bill Cosby’s and Roseanne Barr’s shows being tied at the top for 1990 and Cheers held the covenant spot in 1991. Oddly enough, Ted Danson called it quits just 2 seasons later while Cheers, even after eleven seasons, was still a top ten show.

With over 21 million viewers, easily the most dominant show of the 1990s had to be Seinfield, starring Jerry Seinfeld, playing, well… Jerry Seinfeld. The show won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993, beating out its family-oriented competitor Home Improvement, which at the time was a big hit for NBC’s rival ABC. Frasier, another top 1990s sitcom won “Outstanding Comedy Series” every other year, and for good reason, Frasier was an outstanding comedy television series.

Still, the sheer number of viewers that tuned in week after week kept the show Seinfeld at the top of the list of best programs year after year. However, to the disappointment of millions of fans, and much like Ted Danson’s exit from Cheers, Jerry Seinfeld also pulled the plug on his show while it was still at the top of the ratings.

Several great shows that deserve mentioning are Saved By The Bell, Friends, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and ER. All fantastic shows, but just not in the same league as a Seinfeld, Cheers or The Cosby Show.
