Unless you’re living somewhere dark with no electricity, you’re aware of American Idol. As the show moves into its 9th Season, I’d like to take a moment to look back and see where the winners are now.
Perhaps one of the most famous and popular American Idol winners is the first season winner, Kelly Clarkson. Kelly went on to sign with RCA records after the show and has put forth four records- Thankful, Breakaway, My December, and All I Ever Wanted.
Season two gave us Ruben Studdard. He also has produced four records, but is actually getting more into acting. In 2008 he accepted the role of Fats Domino in the touring production of Ain’t Misbehavin’.
Does everyone remember Fantasia Barrino? She was our winner in season three. Fantasia went on to play Celie in the Broadway musical The Color Purple. She was later cast for the same role in the film adaptation of the musical.
Carrie Underwood won season four and she takes a spot as one of the most recognized. Carrie was the first country artist to win and has continued to excel in the genre with three records- Some Hearts, Carnival Ride, and Play On.
Season five’s winner was Taylor Hicks. Arista records signed Taylor after Idol, but his self debut album sold the least amount of records than any other winner. Taylor parted with Arista, toured as Teen Angel in Grease, and produced his own album.
In 2007, Jordin Sparks took the top spot for season six. She released her self-titled album after Idol, which went to sell around two million copies worldwide. She released her second album Battlefield this year.
The first “rocker” to win was David Cook in season seven. David had released an album titled Analog Heart before Idol and released his self-titled album soon after the shows end. David Cook went platinum.
The most recent Idol winner is Kris Allen, who beat out Adam Lambert for the position. Previous to Idol he released an album entitled Brand New Shoes.
I wonder what this next season will bring us?
