Good Morning USA! In a strong effort for Seth MacFarlane to completely dominate our Sunday nights,  American Dad has come back to us chock full of the political and social humor we have come to adore.  We welcome in the fifth season of the show with “In Country… Club”.

The Veteran’s Day celebration is coming up and Steve (Scott Grimes) has been chosen to sing the national anthem.  Stan (Seth MacFarlane) is unimpressed with his singing and decides he can’t sing correctly because he’s never been to war.  He takes Steve to a Vietnam reenactment and forces Steve to be on guard duty all night.  Steve falls asleep, the camp gets taken over and Stan gets taken hostage by the Vietnamese.  Back in the Vietnam camp (the snack bar), Roger (Seth MacFarlane again) tortures Stan to get him to give him the code for a pay-per-view show, “Barbara Does Celine” in which Barbara Streisand sings Celine Dion songs.  Haley is the one who ultimately gives Roger the code and Roger ends up having an almost religious experience watching the program.

Steve gets super into the reenactment and ends up with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  The fireworks at the Veteran’s Day celebration cause Steve to scream “Vietcong!” and run around attacking people with sharpie markers. He ends up back on the golf course, holed up with all the golf carts, and attacks anyone who tries to get him out.  Stan apologizes to Steve for making him this way and tells Steve he can sing any way he wishes at the Veteran’s Day celebration.

Seth MacFarlane’s an amazing vocal talent and he brings great life to Stan and Roger.  I don’t always agree with the politics of American Dad, but what I do enjoy is that the writers are equal opportunity offenders, poking fun at both the right and left wing extremists.  “In Country… Club” made me laugh and it was good to see the relationship of Stan and Steve grow throughout it.
