In the previous season of Ghost Whisperer, we learned that Melinda, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, and her husband Jim, played by David Conrad, conceived a baby together before Jim died in a shooting accident. We also learned that a very special book predicted that the baby would be born on her due date. This is where the new season picks up.
On her due date, Melinda and Jim go to the hospital. At one point, while Melinda is still not in actual labor, the baby’s heart rate begins to drop and the doctors must perform an emergency c-section. The baby is born and while he is not breathing at first, everything turns out ok, including Melinda’s health. So, the book actually did predict his birth.
She decides to Name him Aiden Lucas.
The show then transports us five years into the future on Aiden’s birthday. It had been explained that young Aiden would be able to see ghosts just like his mother but that his powers would be much more than hers.
Jim is working as a doctor at the hospital. Delia, played by Camryn Manheim, has gone back to real estate. Eli, played by Jamie Kennedy, is still a college professor. They are all still involved with Melinda and now Aiden and they understand that Aiden is going to have special powers beyond his mother’s.
Melinda is awakened by a ghost that warns her to go check on Aiden. She finds him blue and having trouble breathing. At exactly the same time he was born, he is suddenly better, able to breathe, and his color returns to normal. This is the same ghost that has been coming to Aiden on his birthday every year and she asks him if he is ready to go with her. It turns out that she died giving birth the same night that Aiden was born.
It turns out that the ghost thinks Aiden is her son, but it is revealed that her son was adopted. She goes to find her real son and puts him into trouble because she still wants her son to be with her. Aiden saves the boy. It turns out that the adopted father cheated with the ghost and conceived the baby. This gave him parental rights and the right to a closed adoption with him and his wife without her ever having to find out about the affair.
It turns out that Aiden is an empath. He felt the ghost and her death and so he relived them with her every year at the same time.
Once again, Melinda solves the case and the ghost goes into the light. But is all well now? I doubt it. There are obviously big things to come for both Aiden and Melinda. This episode hardly touched on the special powers that Aiden may develop in his future, nor did it touch upon the book very much. What it did was solve another ghost story. It was nice to see Melinda and her son in their new life together, but overall the episode was fairly uneventful and slightly boring.
