Back for its second season, thousands of fans tuned in for the premiere of The Mentalist after weeks of anticipation, waiting for the day to finally arrive. Will the show be as good as it was last season? That’s a question that viewers, including myself, can’t wait to find out. I will say this much, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is back with his usual, clever trickery, solving crime in a way that only he can.

This week’s episode begins with agent Minelli (Gregory Itzin) breaking the news to Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) that their team has been taken off of the Red John serial killer case, and the case has been placed in the hands of agent Sam Bosco (Terry Kinney). Minelli decides to make the switch after becoming concerned that Jane and Lisbon have become too personally involved with the case. Upon news of the switch, Jane threatens to quit the team after working one final case.

The attention turns to Lisbon’s team investigating the murder of a housewife named Monica Dininger, believed to have stolen $1 million from her boss and gone into hiding. Monica’s daughter is bitter at her mother for leaving, especially since her brother had been suffering from cancer. Jane, as usual, attempts to solve the case with trickery, throwing the name of “Miles Thorsen” around to everyone, asking if they know who he is. He leaves everyone on his team wondering what he is up to this time. The episode ends with a surprising and emotional twist as an unlikely culprit is named the murderer. Next week’s episode is titled The Scarlett Letter. It will be interesting to see where the writers take the show this season and what kind of tricks Jane has up his sleeve in the upcoming episodes. I, for one, am looking forward to finding out.
