The television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy premiered on March 27, 2005, on the ABC Television Network. The show follows the twists and turns in the lives of five new interns, now residents, of Seattle Grace Hospital located in Seattle, Washington. Along with their medical mentors the Grey’s Anatomy interns pulled in over 22 million viewers for the show’s first season’s finale last year.
Still one of the most popular shows on Television Grey’s Anatomy began its sixth season on September 24, 2009, with over 14 million viewers tuning it. This was a very dramatic episode that in one breath gave you hope and in the next stole it back from you.
In last season’s finale we were led to believe that the characters of Izzie and George both died and would be leaving the show.
In the sixth season opener we find that Izzie survives her fight with cancer but George becomes brain dead. It is an emotional event that literally traumatizes the entire hospital.
This is another well written script for those who follow Grey’s Anatomy for we see how each character stays in part to grieve just as you would expect each one of them to grieve in their own unique way as the deal with George’s death.
During this turbalant time, the hospital board has decided that the Chief is no longer capable of running the hospital and are in the process of trying to remove him and has gone as far as offer Dr. Shepard the job.
This two part season opener truly epitomize the essence of Grey’s Anatomy and its wide spread appeal. In any given episode you may have four or five lives to follow that range from dangerous and dramatic to warm and loving. Then sometimes, such as at George’s funeral, you see the family weirdness of the characters as they are able to laugh hysterically at the many tragic ironies that life has just thrown at them.
Getting together to laugh while the funeral of one of your closest friends is going on should be strange and out of place, yet that one scene truly culminated the well balanced theme of what Grey’s Anatomy is all about, which is overcoming adversity by staring it right in the face.
